Athens

should be a stop on any visit to Greece, but the shortest. The reason is that Athens is not an attractive city. It is busy, bustling and full of history. To be sure, Athens has improved greatly in recent years, boasting a new airport, new metro and many new and improved highways. But compared to the Greek Islands, Athens is not a vacation paradise.

The best thing about Athens for the tourist is that everything that you will want to see is concentrated in the center of the city and can be seen in 1 or 2 days.  Not to be missed is the Acropolis, the ancient ruins high on a hill, and Plaka the old town built around it. Some may enjoy a walk in Kolonaki, the trendy shopping destination filled with upscale boutiques, chic restaurants and outdoor cafes.

There are many other websites which will give you details on the Akropolis, (to see one Click Here )  so, we will tell you only one thing. You MUST visit the Acropolis in the morning. The reason for this is that in the summer, the afternoon heat is deadly. The climb up the steps and the walk around the Acropolis is withering. From October to March, the Acropolis closes at 2pm. It would be a pity to come to Athens for one day and find the Acropolis closed!  To watch a clip of the Parthenon, the main ruin of the Acropolis Click Here or Click Here

After your morning at the Acropolis, spend the rest of the day visiting the shops, restaurants and cafes of Plaka. To be sure, the restaurants in Plaka are not the best that the city has to offer. Mostly, they are traps which serve Mousaka to hungry tourists (a little known fact is that Greeks rarely eat Moussaka, and if they do, they eat it at home not in a restaurant).  Nevertheless, Plaka is full of charm and even the locals enjoy spending a day enjoying the atmosphere. Other alternatives for Athens, include:

* Kolanaki, a charming upscale neighborhood full of cafes and boutiques.

* Taking a cable car to the top of Mount Lycabettos, for beautiful views of the city

* Walking to Panthenium Stadium- the site of the first Modern Olympic games

* An excursion to Vouliagmeni or Glyfada to enjoy the beach (Vouliagmeni) and nightlife (Glyfada).

Athens Hotels

Eridanus

This is a marvelous boutique hotel with beautifully designed rooms. Rooms are nicely decorated with a beautiful marble spacious bathroom equipped with a bath tub and a special massage shower cabin. There is a kettle in the room and selection of teas and coffees for the guests’ comfort. Soft drinks in the minibar are complementary.  The hotel is centrally located on Pireaus Avenue – a 15 minutes walk from Acropolis and Plaka. However the Avenue is extremely busy and one can hear traffic even with the window closed. Those who prioritize complete quietness should choose a different hotel.

Service at the hotel is satisfactory but defiantly NOT 5-star quality. For example, once we did not get our wake up call, and when we went down stairs to find out why, the desk attendant was chatting up a girl who shyly vanished when we approached. Service at breakfast was inattentive and unfriendly.

Selection at breakfast was just satisfactory limited to the basic stuff.

This hotel has a 5 star rating and while the design of the hotel is 5 star, neither the service nor the breakfast deserves this rating. Would we stay here again? Certainly, but only if the offer is good.

Don’t Trust Your Eyes: Pictures of the hotel on the website look much better than reality. So do not expect a four star quality accommodation. We stayed in a double standard room that was very small, old, run down and basic. TV in the room had a problem with reception so you would see a distorted picture or the program would completely disappear. Gym that is advertised on the website was used as a storage room. Swimming pool is adjacent to a restaurant and can be separated by glass doors, however due to the receptions 2 nights in a row the doors were open and the pool was unusable. Also be aware that  Possidonos Avenue is very active and that makes the hotel a bit noisy. There are some positive things that need to be brought to the attention: first, is that the hotel offers one of the best breakfast in Athens, second, some rooms have a nice view of the sea, third, rooms are equipped with a kettle and free selection of teas/coffees. Would we stay here again? Not likely.

Parthenon

The selling point of this place is the location. It is centrally located; just a few minutes walk from Plaka.  The Hotel is hidden in a small street was hard to find. In fact, one evening our taxi driver dropped us off about three blocks from the hotel complaining that he would not be able to drive us to the hotel (which was not true, as other taxis had brought us to the door). Rooms are nice but simple. Kettle with tea and coffee selection is included in the room price. Service is excellent. The staff really did their best to help us with requests and questions. Breakfast was probably the worst we had in Greece.

Ledra Marriot

Beautiful 5 star hotel that offers 5 star quality accommodation and service. Though on the website it says that the hotel is located “minutes from Parthenon and Plaka” they must mean by taxi. It is not that central, at all!

We got a wonderful deal for our standard room (they call it Quality Room) with luxurious king size bed, big desk, mirrored  minibar, marble bathroom with hair dryer etc (about 130 euro).  The hotel has a beautiful lobby with a spacious bar area “Crystal Lounge”.

There is a BEAUTIFULLY decorated restaurant Kona Kai with Polynesian and Japanese cuisine. Unfortunately we didn’t have a chance to try it as there was a reception. We used with a great pleasure Marriot’s well equipped gym and sauna.

Breakfast selection was simply excellent. We would definitely recommend this hotel especially if you can get a good deal.
