How to Get There
Probably the best way to get to Mykanos from Athens is by hydrofoil (fast boat) from the port of Rafina. The trip can be made in less than two hours and is very comfortable. But on a very windy day, the trip can be quite bumpy and in extreme winds, the fast boats will be cancelled. Then you will have no choice but to take a regular ferry, which can take 5 hours or more. You can also take a ferry from the main port of Pireaus, but this will be longer. There are also frequent flights from Athens to Mykonos.

Where to stay and Beaches Overview
Where you will stay will depend on the reasons you have come to Mykanos. If you are going there mainly for beach and relaxation, or if you are going with small children, there are many nice beach hotels to choose from. However, if you stay at a beach hotes, you will probably miss alot of the activity in the wonderful village (Chora) of Mykonos.
Platis Gialos is not the most beautiful beach on the island. But it does have good infrastructure. It is a small village near a beach. There are several nice hotels there and a few decent restaurants. It is possible to stay here and travel daily by fishing boat to one of the other nicer beaches. The fishing boats leave very frequently for the other beaches from Platis Gialos and buses run frequently to the main town. However, both stop relatively early. This is only a good destination for those interested in a quiet holiday and do not want to rent a car. For one possible beach hotel in Platis Gialos Click Here
If you want to stay in a beach hotel and plan to rent a car, there are many other beach hotels to consider. For example, Ornos Bay has much smaller crowds. It also has few restaurants and other infrastructure. But it has some of the nicest and most expensive luxury hotels on the island. For two examples Click Here and Click Here. But, be warned, without a rental car you may feel very isolated.
Probably one of the best beaches is Paradise beach. It is also one of the most popular. It has rented beach umbrellas, restaurants, shops and some of the nicest sand and bluest water you will ever see. Even though it becomes very crowded on a summer day, it still is comfortable and beautiful. In the early evening around five, some of the bars start to turn up the music, people start dancing on the bar tops, and the beach becomes a party place. To see a video of the evening beach party Click Here. There is not much in the way of accomadation near Paradise except for a camping ground with very basic infrastructure. One of our favorite hotels is the Andronikos. The location, about 15 minute walk to town is not ideal. And the standard rooms are not luxurious. But the hotel has a great deal of charm.
The atmosphere around the swimming pool and outdoor bar is unique. For example, they have covered beds by the swimming pool. The views from the hotel to
the sea are lovely and romantic. To see their website Click Here
Transportation
Transportation in Mykonos is either by public buses, which are good, frequent and inexpensive or rental car. It is NOT recommended to rent a scooter although you do see them everywhere. I once gave a ride to a young tourist who had hit one of the many holes in the road, was thrown off and had broken his leg. He was in terrible pain. His friends had called an ambulance which never came and they had no way to get him help. The infrastructure of
A frequent site in the village of Mykanos is Petros the Pelican. Actually, there have been several Petroses through-out the years. You can often see him walking through the winding streets or sitting near the harbor.
